Therefore contraception is the utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices, practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception or impregnation (pregnancy). ABSTRACT

10 pilot programs organized in public health centers in various urban areas of Colombia by the Faculty of Medicine of

the University of Antoquia to serve as demonstrations for students were evaluated. The objects of the programs were:

1) to determine contraceptive knowledge, attitudes, and practice and characteristics of the female population that

1st used each service; 2) to evaluate the effectiveness, advantages, and disadvantages of contraceptive methods;

3) to design training in family planning at the pre- and postgraduate level at medical schools; 4) to train auxiliary

family planning personnel; 5) to design programs in public health and sex education; 6) to make civil and religious

authorities aware of the population problem and get them involved; 7) to educate fathers in family planning

techniques; and 8) to gain experience. For cultural reasons at the beginning most problams offered only the rhythm

method or pills. The study attempts to describe the most significant aspects of different attitudes toward practice of

family planning in the centers; to collect statistics from all centers for comparison with world rates; to make a

preliminary analysis of various biological, sexual, and demographic variables in family planning; to measure the

efficiency of methods used; and to support or refute various hypotheses concerning family planning. Acceptors are

analyzed by age, marital status, education, religiosity, sex-behavior, fecundity, parity, birth intervals, infant mortality,

abortion, desired family size, motives for family planning, knowledge of methods, use of contraceptive methods, and

reasons for nonuse. Activities of the centers are listed. In general, the projects proved valuable as training centers

and as tools for diffusing family planning information. Success in health education was limited and couples were not

as free to choose their own contraceptive methods as had been hoped. The rhythm method was found to be difficult

to use and to teach and was not very acceptable. Its use-effectiveness was low. What was apparent was the desire

of Colombian couples to plan their families, to use birth control, and to have such services provided by the State.
