ABSTRACT

The case of a 31-year-old woman who developed fatal pulmonary embolisms during treatment with Metrulen is

reported. The patient had a history of obesity and thrombophlebitis following her 8th and 10th pregnancies. Oral

contraception was prescribed 6 weeks after the last delivery; death occurred 1 month later. Autopsy findings

indicated thrombosis of the left uterine vein leading to pulmonary infarctus. The advisability of prescribing an

estrogen-containing combined oral contraceptive for a woman with a history of thrombophlebitis is discussed.
