ABSTRACT

The family planning experiment organized by the New Delhi Branch of the Family Planning Association of India

among the 12,000 workers of the Najafgarh Road industrial belt of Delhi is described. The area was chosen because

of: large numbers of persons under 1 roof; available resources such as trade unions, workers' education classes,

and voluntary organizations; voluntary participation; and the possibility of extra monetary incentives and special

leave with pay. The emphasis was on a 'workers program' with a core of leaders from among the workers themselves

organizing the approach, doing the educating, and feeding suggestions into the family planning workers. To be

successful a family planning program must interpret the idea correctly to various groups involved, must interpret the

idea correctly to various groups involved, know the people and the community and find out basic attitudes, and

secure cooperation of natural leaders within the community. Results have been encouraging; 92.7% know about

family planning now, with the condom the most popular method. Similar action programs are being conducted in

government and semigovernmental organizations. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT9T 1040-06)
