ABSTRACT

A program set up in 1964 to control fertility with the goal of bringing down the annual population growth from 3% in

1963 to less than 2% in 1973 has been evaluated by the Taiwan Population Studies Center. By the end of 1967 a

total of 20% of the number of "eligible" women had been inserted with intrauterine loops. Rates of acceptance of the

loop show a positive correlation with age, parity and education through junior high school. Termination of use of the

loops is high. The pregnancy rate was higher with the use of the smaller loops than with the larger. Fertility of the

loop acceptors declined by 76-84%, compared with a decline of 7.4% in the general married population.
