Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

| Family planning policy and the physician's role in family planning in East Germany are discussed. From a societal |
| viewpoint, the protection of family live and the health of the cocclec mother, as well as regulation of the rate of |
| population growth, are important aspects. The physician therefore has the following duties: sexual education and |
| counseling, encouragement of parenthood and the treatment of sterility, prevention of illegal and repeated abortion, |
| prevention and treatment of sexual disorders, and of disturbances of sexual and family life. These duties are |
| integrated into the system of marriage and family planning counseling services, which have contributed greatly to the |
