PubHealth.info®
(a subsidiary of
PakMed) presents scientific information mainly
based on abstracts of articles published on a variety of public health issues/topics,
particularly encompassing
population planning, disease prevention, maternal and child health,
and communicable and
non-communicable diseases (like HIV AIDS, malaria, etc) that are
affecting a significant portion of population in developing and
developed
countries. Here you can find abstracts of articles published on a variety of public health
topics under category "Contraception
(Birth Control) and Family Planning".
Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

Effect of the contraceptive steroids norethynodrel and mestranol on dental
caries activity in young adult female rats.
Journal of Dental Research 52(4): 753-757. July-August 1973.
Weanling female rats, Sprague-Dawley strain, separated into 3 groups, were fed on a caries test diet of MIT diet
number 200 and distilled water to determine the effect of contraceptive steroids on dental caries in young female
rats. At 50 days of age the first group received daily, 100 mcg norethynodrel plus 4 mcg mestranol in steroid diluent.
Group 2 received 4 times the above dose. Group 3 served as controls receiving only the steroid diluent. Rats were
sacrificed at 85 days and caries assessed by the method of Keyes. The molars were stained with Schiff's reagent.
Caries activity increased with an increase in dose. Mean buccolingual enamel lesions/rat increased with dose but
those with dentinal involvement and proximal lesions occurred only at the higher dose. Major and minor sulcal
lesions/rat in treated groups were significantly higher than controls, although all rats showed major sulcul lesions.
At high dose weight of submandibular glands increased. Absolute and relative parotid gland weight increased with
dose. Absolute adrenal gland weights remained the same. Absolute weight of thyroid glands and ovaries decreased
with dose. Several theories of action of steroids in increasing dental caries are suggested. (PubHealth.info
