ABSTRACT

The anatomical and physiological factors involved in conception are described, and the various mechanisms that

may prevent it (by inhibiting ovogenesis or spermatogenesis, by inhibiting fecundation, by removing the ovum from the

fallopian tubes after ovulation) are discussed, and contraceptive methods presently in use (coitus interruptus,

rhythm, cond oms and diaphragms, douches and vaginal spermicides, IUDs, and oral contraceptives) are described.

Oral contraceptives are discussed in much greater detail, covering components, dosage of components,

mechanism of action, the treatment schedule, contraceptive effectiveness and possible risks, tolerance, precautions

and contraindications, and safety. The use of contraceptives in Italy and in other countries is briefly discussed

including statistics and trends. Also included are 33 illustrative color plates, covering graphically the same

subjects. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT8T 4557-06)
