Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less

Contraception (Birth Control) and Family Planning |
Some considerations in the generation and use of management information in
the national family planning program.
Managua, Nicaragua, Instituto Centroamericano de Administracion de Empresas,
Departing from the standpoint that timely and appropriate information is essential to effective management of any
system or program, this paper focuses upon considerations for more effective management and information systems
design for the family planning field. The effective management of information is essential for setting program goals,
determining specific strategies as well as evaluating a program's performance. Ineffective management of many
family planning efforts is seen as the result of the diversified interests of the many professional traditions involved in
a program's design and execution. The paper provides guidelines by which the researcher, the evaluator, the
statistician and the accountant might better structure their specialized tasks required in the decision-making
processes of the program manager. Key elements are provided for a more concise definition of program planning
and control. Roles and responsibilities are reconsidered in hopes of better organizing tasks to meet the needs of the
program manager. The importance of marketing research and research analysis to program planning are presented
as essential, and yet areas which many programs do not focus upon as priorities in planning. External auditing and
consulting services are also presented as potential sources for greater effectiveness in program management.
