Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

| Because of their high position in society, medical doctors have a great obligation to serve the needs of the |
| community, particularly in rural areas where doctor shortages are acute. In the field of family planning the young |
| doctor can assist by: 1) educating his own relatives and community; 2) assist in setting up local general health care |
| organizations incorporating family planning; 3) being willing to work in local clinics and to train paramedical |
| personnel in free time. To be effective the medical student must gain rapport with the local community and be |
