ABSTRACT

The State of Rio Grande do Norte is one of the poorest in Brazil and one of those with the highest population growth

(3.3%, as compared with 2.9% for all of Brazil). In order to attain a wide coverage, and in view of the shortage of

physicians and graduate nurses, athe family planning program made use of specially trained paramedical personnel.

After 1 year's experience with 28,000 women for 120,000 cycles, it was f ound that the risk to the patients as a result

of side effects and contraindications was minimal and insignificant in comparison with the beneficial effects of the

program. The distribution of contraceptives was promoted and supported by a massive educational program. The

requirements of a successful program are summarized as follows: wide coverage, low operating costs, delegation of

responsibility to trained paramedical staff, mass education and information program, support by a medical and

welfare organization, cooperation on the part of the school system and government support; respect for the values

and customs of the population, use of local resources, and volunteer support. (PubHealth.info Document ID:
