Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

Pyridoxal, vitamin B12 and folate metabolism in women taking oral
South African Medical Journal 48(46): 1937-1940. September 21, 1974.
A study of pyridoxal, Vitamin-B12, and folate levels in women taking oral contraceptives (OCs) was described. The
results were compared with age-matched nonpregnant controls. No marked differences were found in the pyridoxal or
hemaglobin levels. Significantly lower levels of serum Vitamin-B12 (p < .001), serum folate (p less than .001), and
red cell folate (p less than .001) were found in the women taking OCs when compared with the controls. It was
suggested that additional folic acid may be beneficial in women wishing to conceive soon after treatment with OCs.
