PubHealth.info®
(a subsidiary of
PakMed) presents scientific information mainly
based on abstracts of articles published on a variety of public health issues/topics,
particularly encompassing
population planning, disease prevention, maternal and child health,
and communicable and
non-communicable diseases (like HIV AIDS, malaria, etc) that are
affecting a significant portion of population in developing and
developed
countries. Here you can find abstracts of articles published on a variety of public health
topics under category "Contraception
(Birth Control) and Family Planning".
Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

Endocrine Research Communications 2(6-7): 445-458. 1975.
A study demonstrated that luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LRH ) when administered subcutaneously (sc) or
orally (po) to female rats can interfere with pregnancy and that the hormone posseses extrapituitary activity.
Pregnancy was inhibited 100% when daily sc doses of 1000 mcg/rat were given from Days 1 to 7. LRH effectively
intercepted and terminated pregnancy in 100% of rats delivered from Days 7 to 12 of pregnancy at a daily dose of
1000 mcg/rat sc or po. When rabbits were administered LRH from Days 1 to 6 at a total dose of 1000 mcg/kg sc, and
80% inhibition was noted. Uterotrophic studies revealed that LRH, when administered sc to intact immature mice,
produced a dose-related increase in uterine and ovarian weight and initiates vaginal opening. A dose-related
increase in uterine weight as produced by the hypothalamic hormone was exhibited in ovariectomized mice and
hypophysectomized rats. Data demonstrate that LRH has an extrapituitary and antipregnancy postcoital effect.
