(Birth Control) and Family Planning".
Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

Post partum programme in family planning.
Journal of the Indian Medical Association 64(11): 289-292. June 1, 1975.
The International Post Partum Family Planning Programme, initiated by the Population Council, started in India in
1969 in 59 selected hospitals. Since then the program has spread and will be put into effect in all hospitals
providing maternity services in the country. The program aims at increasing acceptance of a method of family
planning within 3 months of delivery or abortion. The Indian government supplies contraceptives, staff funding, clinic
building funding, and some technical assistance for the program. Vasectomies and tubectomies have increased
since the program began. There is hope that the IUD will be successful. The program integrates maternal and child
health services in a successful combination. Lack of adequate space, equipment, time and administration for the
program hinders further success. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT7T 3082-06)
