ABSTRACT

A case is reported of a 38-year-old woman who became pregnant while her Dalkon Shield was retained in the uterus.

She developed sepsis at 20 weeks gestation leading to septic abortion and death 3 days after the onset of

symptoms. The theory is proposed that the spicules which spread out from the Dalkon shield may do sufficient

tissue damage to create a focus of infection in the uterus. Management of patients who become pregnant while

wearing this device is discussed. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT7T 3080-06)
