Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

| On the basis of Latin American and Mexican statistics, the need for family planning in those countries and the rapid |
| population growth which constitutes 1 of the main concerns of the government are discussed. Family planning |
| should be widespread and adopt different approaches, adapted to the social, cultural, and economic conditions of |
| the population, always respecting the dignity of the family. The demographic legislation of Mexico is analyzed, and |
| the need for integrated programs of health promotion, medical care, improvement of ed ucation and environmental |
| sanitation is emphasized. The close contacts between the pediatrician and the family and his role as a local leader |
| enable him to provide an an important contribution to the expansion of family planning, by providing expert advise and |
