ABSTRACT

The relationship between contraceptive counseling and abortion is discussed. A new Swedish law provides for more

readily available free counseling on contraceptive measures to cut down on the number of abortions. The

effectiveness of such counseling seems doubtful. In a comparison of the number of counseling sessions per 1000

women per year and the number of abortions per 1000 women per year in the various Swedish provinces, the 3

highest ratios of abortions per 1000 women fall in the top 1/2 of the provinces ranked according to the number of

counseling sessions per 1000 women, in decreasing order. This is also true for the frequency of teenage abortion,

with the greatest ratio of teenage abortions performed in the city having the highest ratio for counseling. The

expected relationship between increased counseling and decrease of abortion does not seem valid. Instead of just

couseling in the use of contraceptives, a greater incentive for their use is needed, and patients seeking abortion

should be informed to a greater extent of the risks that accompany the procedure. (PubHealth.info Document ID:
