Professional Development Module

ABSTRACT

This is 1 of a series of development modules designed to assist professionals in the IEC (information, education,

and communication) branch of population/family planning programs to improve their communication skills. Each

module is complete and geared toward self-instruction. This module is built around actual cases and problems,

using actual examples and data, and balanced between principles and techniques for practical application.

Communication between the supervisors and employees is 1 aspect of the material. The other aspect involves

interorganizational communication, i.e., communication between voluntary population organizations and other

voluntary and governmental organizations in the field. It is felt that organizations will function more effectively if there

is greater communication, both horizontal and vertical. Communication should deal with the transmission of facts,

not normative or value-related information. Personal and formal communication is more effective than impersonal

and informal communication. The module includes lecture material, homework assignments, and visuals to be used

in the training session. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT7T 3013-06)
