ABSTRACT

Current research into development of an OC (oral contraceptive) for males is discussed. The following major

problems with such a method had to be solved before development of any potential method: 1) availability of an

effective oral androgen; 2) avoidance of interference with the libido, secondary sexual characteristics and other

physiological parameters; and 3) the constant release of gonadotrophins in males requiring a steady-state

maintenance of hormones. In order to achieve a sustained release of steroids, they may be modified chemically or

bound to inert nonabsorbable materials for subcutaneous application. Several clinical studies using OCs in males

are cited. The tests achieved some azoospermia and indicated that the substances being tested had no serious

effects on libido or potency. The main drawback is that the method still requires several weeks to become effective

or be reversed. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT7T 3010-06)
