Therefore contraception is the utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices, practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception or impregnation (pregnancy). ABSTRACT

The development of oral contraceptives and recent progress in this field are reviewed. The discussion covers the

various types of contraceptives, their method of action, the various methods of administration (e.g., sequential and

continuous), the possible side effects (with special reference to the risk of thrombosis and a discussion of

contraindications in cases in which the drugs may increase the risk in predisposed subjects), and the advantages

obtained by the great reductions in the doses used in the more recent products. A discussion with several

colleagues, covering the use of these drugs in the period preceding the onset of menopause, the long-term use by

young women, prospects for the development of oral contraceptives for men, various side effects (it is concluded

that the use of the pill is a calculated risk), and prospects for new developments in the field of morning-after pills is

included. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT7T 3001-06)
