ABSTRACT

The International Planned Parenthood Federation is an international organization which was established in 1952

with the objective of achieving the initiation and support of family planning services and an increased understanding

on the part of both people and government of the population problems of their communities and of the world. The

International Planned Parenthood Foundation has encouraged the formation of national family planning associations

in every country of the world. In November 29, 1952 the International Planned Parenthood Federation was born in the

Indian Ocean Region as a result of the Bombay Conference. Member associations of the Indian Ocean Region of

the Federation include the family planning associations of India, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. In India the

Association is a national voluntary organization. It maintains a comprehensive program which includes information,

education and motivation activities, clinical and non-clinical services, training, research and population education.

The Family Planning Association of Iran, a national legislative organization, has as its objective the attainment of

health and welfare of families through family planning. The Association works to assist families in determining the

number of children they want and to subsequently reduce the rates of abortion and infant mortality. Top priority has

been given to information and education; however, reaching a mainly rural and illiterate population in an essentially

mountainous terrains is extremely difficult. It now operates 5 clinics and a number of mobile clinics in rural areas.

The goal of the Nepal Association is to offer family planning services to 15% of the married women of ages 15 to 45

or to their husbands by establishing 260 clinics in 40 district offices during the period of 1971 to 1975. The Family

Planning Association of Pakistan is a registered social welfare agency. Its information and education efforts have

focused on the use of all kinds of media. There are 2 model clinics with facilties for vasectomies and tubectomies.

In 1973 4 tubectomy and 5 vasectomy camps were held. 13 1 week training programs for industrial worker motivators

were conducted during 1974. In Sri Lanka a project standing committee was formed in 1974 to coordinate the

activities of the Association. An information unit was established in 1969 with professional staff to provide

information and educational support to the field program. In 1973 there were 25 operating clinic sessions.
