Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

NORPLANT subdermal implants approved by Finland: worldwide effort to
introduce new contraceptive begins [news release]
[Unpublished] 1983 Nov 23. 2 p.
The Finnish National Board of Health has approved the sale and distribution in Finland of Norplant subdermal
implants. The Norplant contraceptive method was developed by the Population Council. Norplant implants will be
manufactured by Huhtamaki Oy, Leiras Pharmaceuticals, an international pharmaceutical firm based in Finland,
under license from the Population Council. Distribution will begin immediately in Finland, and registration will be
initiated in over 40 additional countries, including the US, during the next 3-4 years. The implants have been tested
in clinical studies and field trials involving more then 7000 women in 14 countries. They have been found to be the
most effective contraceptive yet developed, with a pregnancy rate of less then 0.5/100 woman-years of exposure. The
contraceptive effect is achieved within 24 hours of insertion and lasts for 5 years. As the Norplant implants become
more widely available, they are expected to make a substantial contribution to international family planning programs.
