is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less

This study, carried out in 1981 by the Nepal Ministry of Health, examines the effects of contraceptive use in Nepal.
Its purpose is 1) to provide information necessary to plan for and evaluate the family planning program; 2) to train
family planning staff in methods of conducting surveys; and 3) to enhance their capability for conducting similar
surveys in the future. Geographical, socioeconomic, and health factors related to family planning are discussed.
The program's objectives and activities are explained. A detailed section on survey methodology including selection
of the sample, questionnaire design, and data processing is included. Socioeconomic characteristics of the
respondents and their current patterns and future expectation of fertility is documented. An extensive summary gives
information on the extent to which Nepalese families know about family planning, how widely contraceptive methods
are used and how convenient the family planning centers are to the general populace. Flaws in survey methodology
are noted, and specific recommendations based on the results of the survey are given. (PubHealth.info Document ID:
