PubHealth.info®
(a subsidiary of
PakMed) presents scientific information mainly
based on abstracts of articles published on a variety of public health issues/topics,
particularly encompassing
population planning, disease prevention, maternal and child health,
and communicable and
non-communicable diseases (like HIV AIDS, malaria, etc) that are
affecting a significant portion of population in developing and
developed
countries. Here you can find abstracts of articles published on a variety of public health
topics under category "Contraception
(Birth Control) and Family Planning".
Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

Contraception (Birth Control) and Family Planning |
Need and use of research in the voluntary surgical contraception experience
in the Dominican Republic.
[Unpublished] 1983. Paper presented at International Conference on Voluntary
Sterilization, 5th, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, December 5-8, 1983. 6 p.
This paper outlines general areas in which research and studies related to Voluntary Surgical Contraception (VSC)
should be undertaken and concentrated. These include research and support studies upon initiation of VSC
programs to establish short and long term objectives, goals, target population and the logistics of the program. Other
types of important studies should determine program impact on fertility rates and population growth and follow-up
studies to establish rescheduling needs of the program and to gather information on the post-operational and
psychoemotional state of the user. Experience in the Dominican Republic illustrates the various uses of research.
The initiation of a VSC program in the country was based on data demonstrating demand for the method. Data also
showed that the average female sterilization seeker was older and highly parturient. The demographic impact can
only be achieved when a younger and less parturient population is reached. This finding resulted in the elimination
of a minimum age requirement for women seeking sterilization. It is emphasized that, given the character of the VSC
service, it is necessary to keep information on user level of satisfaction with the method as well as on the behavior of
the demographic variables of the population served; and that the analysis of existing data contributes to
improvement of service and projection of achievements without need to add large costs to the service.
