is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less

Contraception (Birth Control) and Family Planning |
The Natural Family Planning Programme of Changanacherry family apostolate.
Bulletin of the Natural Family Planning Association of India. 1983 Apr;6(2):29-31.
Ths history and activities of the natural family planning (NFP) program, operated by the Catholic Archdiocese of
Changanacherry in India, are described The archdiocese covers sevearl districts in Kerala and 1 district in Tamil
Nadu and contains a total population of 865,549 and a Catholic population of 315,680. The NFP program was
initiated in 1973 by the Reverend Sister Alma Kizhakekara, who was trained in NFP in a program conducted by the
Natural Family Planning Association of India. In 1978 Sister Alma received further training at the Ovulation Method
Reference Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Initially the program operated only through a center at the Saint Thomas
Hospital in Changanacherry and 2 subcenters. In 1980 the program had 260 clients. In that same year, the program
received a Misereor grant from the Indo-German Social Service Society, and program activities were expanded. One
of the goals of the program is to provide couples in Kerala, where both contraceptive motivation and the use of non-
natural methods is high, with an understanding of NFP. Therefore, the program conducts numerous NFP sessions
for couples at the diocese, vicariate, and parish level, at local colleges, and at several maternal and child health
centers. The program promotes the Billings ovulation method. To date, a total of 25,000 individuals have
participated in more than 172 training sessions, and 6500 women have received charts for recording their menstrual
cycles. Currently, the program operates 100 centers, and eventually centers will be opened in all areas of the
archdiocese. To date, 1940 couples use the Billings method and review their charts with center personnel. 60% of
the acceptors use the method to limit pregnancy, and the remainder use the method to space births. Between 1978-
82, 2 acceptors droupped out of the program due to planned pregnancies. Several of the acceptors are
nonChristians. Many other individuals who obtained ab knowledge of NFP in the training sessions use the method,
but they are hesitant about using the charts and consulting with program staff about such personal matters. NFP is
integrated with all the family pastoral services provided by the Family Life Center of the diocese. (PubHealth.info
