ABSTRACT

The FDA has approved a time-released birth control implant called Norplant, which will be available in the

marketplace in February 1991. 6 capsules release levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin, over a 5-year period. The

matchstick-size silicone rubber capsules are implanted in a woman's upper arm. Philadelphia-based Wyeth-Ayerst

Laboratories will market the device as well as train physicians on how to implant the capsules in women. Norplant

has already been approved in 16 countries, according to the Population Council. It is the 1st longacting hormonal

contraceptive available in the US. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT3T 2530-06)
