ABSTRACT

This publication reports on the 1990 international activities of the Association for Voluntary Surgical Contraception

(AVSC), an organization whose purpose is to make voluntary sterilization and long-lasting methods of reversible

contraception available to men and women around the world. It is estimated that as many as 82 million people

worldwide may require voluntary sterilization services during the 1990s. In order to have the greatest impact

possible, AVSC has adopted 9 special program activities grouped into 3 categories: Introduction of appropriate

technology -- 1) minilaparotomy under local anesthesia, 2) vasectomy, 3) postpartum family planning, and 4)

Norplant. Quality assurance -- 5) family planning counseling and client information, 6) medical safety oversight, 7)

training, and 8) client-oriented and provider-efficient services. The last category consists of a single initiative -- 9)

research and evaluation. Section I of the report describes AVSC's strategy and highlights from 1990. Section II of

the report summarizes AVSC's accomplishments under each of its 9 initiatives. Section III briefly reviews the

amount and distribution of funds and grants awarded during the year. And section IV provides reports from the

following regions: Sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa and the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, and

Asia. Finally, the appendixes address the following issues: internal evaluations, service statistics, medical review

of complications and mortalities in AVSC-supported programs, and finances. (PubHealth.info Document ID:
