Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

Women's reproductive health: the role of family planning programs.
OUTLOOK. 1994 Aug;12(2):1-2.
In developing countries, reproductive health problems account for about a third of the total disease burden in women
between 15 and 44 years old and continue to be a major problem as women age. This situation occurs first of all
because it is women who bear children. In addition, women are more susceptible than men to sexually transmitted
diseases, they are more likely to suffer longterm consequences of reproductive tract infections, and they may transmit
disease to their unborn children. This situation is exacerbated by the worldwide increase in incidence of sexually
transmitted diseases and HIV infection and by the fact that women often lack access to the means to prevent
pregnancy or to protect themselves against infection. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT2T 4509-06)
