PubHealth.info®
(a subsidiary of
PakMed) presents scientific information mainly
based on abstracts of articles published on a variety of public health issues/topics,
particularly encompassing
population planning, disease prevention, maternal and child health,
and communicable and
non-communicable diseases (like HIV AIDS, malaria, etc) that are
affecting a significant portion of population in developing and
developed
countries. Here you can find abstracts of articles published on a variety of public health
topics under category "Contraception
(Birth Control) and Family Planning".
Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

Contraception (Birth Control) and Family Planning |
Quality of family planning services from provider's perspective.
Observations from a qualitative study in Sitapur district, Uttar Pradesh.
Khan ME; Patel BC; Gupta RB
[New Delhi], India, Population Council, 1995. 22 p. USAID Contract No. DPE-3030-
Focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and informal discussions were conducted with a variety of family
planning and health providers in Sitapur District, Uttar Pradesh, India. The reported topics include the work setting,
facilities and supplies management, time management, male support to ANMs, perceived quality of services,
perceived competence of staff, method mix, knowledge of many methods, follow-up services, and targets. The
authors conclude that subcenters lacked proper space, equipment, and adequate supplies of contraceptives and
medicine. Quality of services was compromised due to deficits in facilities and supplies. A second concern was
the inadequate transportation of health workers to subcenters or for outreach. A suggestion was to provide interest-
free loans for workers' purchase of bicycles or scooters. Other time management concerns had to do with effective
scheduling of time. ANMs lacked sufficient skill in inserting IUDs and in providing counseling. Training must be
based on the needs of ANMs in provision of services. The target approach interfered with women's free choice of
contraception, eroded the reputation of subcenters in the provision of quality care, and led to physical harm to
patients. The integration of family planning with "revenue workers" in development programs has jeopardized the
health of patients and led to frustration among health workers. Revenue workers are able to offer large incentives for
sterilization for patients counseled for sterilization by health workers. Abuses occur, such as the sterilization of
women at advanced stages of pregnancy. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT2T 3053-06)
