developed
countries. Here you can find abstracts of articles published on a variety of public health
topics under category "Contraception
(Birth Control) and Family Planning".
Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

Emergency contraception prevents pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse. Although currently marketed in
the US only as regular methods of ongoing contraception, emergency contraceptive pills, progestin-only minipills,
and the copper-T IUD can also be used as emergency contraception. Each method requires a prescription.
Considerable research indicates that emergency contraceptives are safe and effective. Making such methods widely
available could therefore have a significant impact upon reducing the incidence of unintended pregnancy and the
need for abortion. The Emergency Contraception Hotline, 1-800-584-9911, is a toll-free service which provides
callers with information about emergency contraceptive methods available in the US as well as the names,
telephone numbers, and locations of three providers located nearest to them. The hotline is completely confidential,
fully automated, and available 24 hours a day in English and Spanish. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT2T 2577-
