ABSTRACT

The author introduces a dynamic period coding approach to event history analysis for family planning program

evaluation. The approach allows the time period codings to vary with each individual lifetime, thus permitting the

assignment of precise period codings to both uncensored and censored cases. Considering the time varying period

dummy variables as indicators of social structures in different time periods, the coding technique allows the indirect

assessment of the effect of family planning programs upon fertility-related behaviors in a country or region in which

program inputs and efforts are hard to measure. The technique is found appropriate to the study of the hazard of

transition to first marriage among women in Shifang County, Sichuan, China, women who have been under the

influence of family planning development since the early 1970s. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT2T 2549-06)
