Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

Contraception (Birth Control) and Family Planning |
The quality of family planning services in Douala, Cameroon. [Die Qualitat
der Familienplanungsdienste in Douala, Kamerun.]
Curare. 1997;20(2):137-143.
Under the Hypothesis that the "Quality of Performance of family planning (FP) services influences the clients'
judgement of quality and has thereby a substantial influence on their contraceptive behaviour", this study examined
the influence of the elements of quality, as defined by Bruce 1990. The study showed high quality in the FP services;
the influence of Bruce's elements on clients regarding their contentment as well as acceptance and continuity of
application were demonstrated. FP services were of high quality; the clients are provided with a wide variety of FP
methods and rich informations about these. The provider's technical competence regarding the medical standard
and the techniques of counselling were proven to be good; so were the interactive abilities of the FP providers: they
take their time, are friendly to the client and make use of visual materials when explicating the different methods of
contraception. The interviews showed, that on the client's side a friendly attitude and information an FP are the main
points. Generally FP facilities were appreciated by the women: In Douala, the rate of application of modern methods
of contraception has doubled in the past five years. A great problem are rumours about modern contraceptives:
permanent infertility, siblings and cancer are feared. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT2T 1025-06)
