ABSTRACT

This paper presents findings of the first phase of a study that was conducted to assist the development of the most

appropriate message to be given to rural young people about contraception. The first phase, also called the

qualitative phase, used focus group discussions and interviews to meet the three research objectives: 1) to explore

the target perceptions of different health providers; 2) to evaluate how the target perceive available contraceptive

technologies; and 3) to understand how the target perceive what constitutes as Keluarga Sejahtera --how they view

an ideal marriage. In general, in all the areas that were surveyed, it appeared that more emphasis was placed on the

emotional aspect of family life, like a feeling of being content with the family condition. They acknowledged the fact

that material things are important, but they said it would be useless to have a lot of material things if they do not feel

peaceful within. They also differentiated between sejahtera (well-being) versus kaya (rich). They said kaya was a

description of a family which has many economic resources, but it does not necessarily mean sejahtera , because

kaya can also mean a lot of problems , while to be sejahtera one does not have to be rich. (PubHealth.info
