(Birth Control) and Family Planning".
Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

This Indonesian brochure describes the concept of prosperous family development through the national family
planning movement. It presents a 1997-98 policy statement and its strategies and main activities. Programs for
prosperous family development conform to the same principles as sustainable development: analysis of past
experiences, program results, and future prospects. The aim is to build strong human resources and to create self-
sufficient family quality, prosperous family resilience, and other support mobilizations. Family efforts include a
reproductive effort, an economic effort, and an empowerment effort. The aim is to strengthen institutions for creating
small families, alleviating poverty, and increasing program support for pregnant mothers and new couples. Special
strategies aim to make families an institutional target, to increase IEC and partnerships, and to manage programs in
a directed way. Family Law Number 10, in 1992, identifies the main activities needed for creating prosperous, happy,
and small families. The main activities involved mobilizing families through IEC and mobilizing the community.
Reproductive efforts aim to improve family planning services, especially for poor families, and to develop self-reliant
family planning. Safe familyhood is an extension of safe motherhood. Attitude change and prevention of sexually
transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS are program components. The economic effort aims to increase family income
generation, to improve staff motivation, to develop referral centers, and other business objectives. (PubHealth.info
