ABSTRACT

A telephone line was set up by the Association for Family Planning and Sex Education for the sake of dispensing

advice on contraception, providing sex education, and giving women quick and reliable information about family

planning and sexually transmitted diseases. From the outset it was understood that the line would serve as an

alternative for those young people who could not make up their mind to come to the outpatient gynecological service.

The line was open every day from 8 am till 6 pm. The questions were answered by 5th and 6th year medical

students and delivery room assistants. During the period of January 16 to December 16, 1996, a total of 1096

inquires were made. 96% of the callers were women. 388 calls (35.4%) were made by people aged 19 or younger.

30% of the inquiries were made by adolescents in the 15-19 age group, 16.0% by people in the 20-24 age group,

15.4% by those aged 25-29, and 15.4% by those aged 35- 39. The average number of calls per day amounted to 6.9

on Mondays, 6.2 on Tuesdays, 5.9 on Wednesdays, 5.5 on Thursdays, and 5.2 on Fridays. The questions

concerned hormonal contraceptives (33%), appropriate contraception during first intercourse (20%), problems not

related to contraception (14%), the selection of the appropriate contraceptive (13%), adverse effects of

contraceptives (6%), contraceptives other than oral contraceptives (5%), postcoital contraceptives (4%), sexually

transmitted diseases (3%), and fear of pregnancy (2%). For the 1st instance of intercourse and the prevention of

sexually transmitted diseases the condom was recommended, and postcoital contraception was recommended for

use in every case by inexperienced partners. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT2T 1006-06)
