PubHealth.info®
(a subsidiary of
PakMed) presents scientific information mainly
based on abstracts of articles published on a variety of public health issues/topics,
particularly encompassing
population planning, disease prevention, maternal and child health,
and communicable and
non-communicable diseases (like HIV AIDS, malaria, etc) that are
affecting a significant portion of population in developing and
developed
countries. Here you can find abstracts of articles published on a variety of public health
topics under category "Contraception
(Birth Control) and Family Planning".
Contraception (birth control)
is a regimen of one or more actions, devices, or medications followed in
order to deliberately prevent or reduce the likelihood of a woman
becoming pregnant or giving birth. Therefore contraception is the
utilization of various and sundry surgical procedures, devices,
practices, agents, or drugs with the intention of preventing conception
or impregnation (pregnancy). Methods and intentions typically termed
birth control may be considered a pivotal ingredient to family
planning. Birth control is a controversial political and ethical
issue in many cultures and religions, and although it is generally less
controversial than abortion specifically. |

Records of 190 of the 205 health centers, hospitals, and private clinics in Benin were analyzed for the 5-year period
1990-94 to determine the prevalence of contraceptive usage and induced abortion throughout Benin. Available
statistics on abortion or curettage and on IUD insertion were compiled for the 190 health centers. Information on
sales of contraceptive products in family planning clinics and health centers and by mobile teams was used to
indicate use of other methods. During the 5-year period, 8186 abortions were reported. 80% were in women aged 15-
25 years. The overall prevalence was 1.5 abortions/1000 deliveries, varying from 1.4/1000 in 1990 to 1.8/1000 in
1994. The prevalence of contraceptive usage increased from 4.7/1000 fertile-aged women in 1990 to 20.1/1000 in
1994. In 1994, the department of Zou had the lowest rate of usage, 20/1000 fertile-aged women, while Oueme had
the highest rate, 31.1/1000. Estimated prevalence increased in all 6 departments over the 5-year period. The data
should be interpreted cautiously because of the possibilities of bias. It appears, however, that rates of both abortion
and contraception are increasing. (PubHealth.info Document ID: CONT2T 1003-06)
